Are you looking for an event to get better acquainted with Virtual Reality? In partnership with Joshua Alan Young from the Portland VR Meetup, co-organizers Judy Fischbach and Marguerite Gallagher invite you to come learn what Virtual Reality offers and to understand why there is so much trending interest. An emerging technology that is expected to impact many fields, including entertainment, journalism, education, and health care, VR/AR has been identified by the Technology Association of Oregon as one of top areas of technology growth in our state. The community in Portland is gaining momentum. It's an exciting time for many of us to jump in as the technology is so new. The playing field is more level and there is much interest beyond non-technology in areas such as the arts and education. The integrative nature of creating applications in VR can be unique and fun!

Don’t know where to begin? We will have an overview, hands-on opportunities to experience the technology, and information on tools and resources. Our panel will include speakers from the community on VR education and on companies/projects with promising VR related work which demonstrates the variety of exciting applications. Guest Speakers and Talk Description:

Females in social virtual reality get unwanted attention, which is a barrier to widespread adoption. How might we learn more about female users in order to make Social VR appealing to all? Jessica Outlaw and Beth Duckles will share results from their qualitative study of women in social virtual reality and their recommendations for all tech creators.

Jessica Outlaw, M.S., is VR/AR experience researcher and founder of Data Driven LLC. Trained as a behavioral scientist, she uses qualitative and quantitative research methods to strategize and test experiences. She blogs at "The Extended Mind on how changes in the body and the environment influence the way that users think, feel, and behave in VR. She received her B.A. in Sociology from Scripps College and her Masters from U.C. San Diego.

Beth M. Duckles, Ph.D. is a sociologist and ethnographer who has worked in industry, nonprofits, government agencies and higher education. She has taught topics such as qualitative research, energy policy, organizational theory and nonprofit organizations. She received her B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from Earlham College and her Ph.D. in Sociology from University of Arizona. More information can be found here.

Rachel Bracker is a virtual reality video editor and producer at 360 Labs, a Portland-based VR video production company that creates immersive experiences for clients like Google, The United States Coast Guard, and Columbia Sportswear. A graduate from the University of Oregon's Multimedia Journalism Master's degree program, Rachel specializes in documentary storytelling and is passionate about using VR to tell better stories. She will share her experiences creating 360 videos and provide insight into the inherit strengths of storytelling in this exciting medium.

Kerri Lynne Thorp will be discussing experiments and experience in non-fiction immersive storytelling. Kerri is an artist, futurist and feminist, exploring story and culture through documentary, virtual reality, and public engagement. Her desire to expand access to technology is driven by her use of storytelling as a crucial way to affect social change. Kerri is the Board VP of NW Documentary and Woman Led. She is currently and teaches 360 video production and is developing a mobile art gallery VR application, Kerri is also the creative director for the youth documentary program Produced by Her.

Demo Experience - HAUBERK 360 An interactive 360 exploration of artist Rosana Ybarra's solo exhibition Hauberk. Hauberk is a collection of works that act as hybrid between the amulet (a good luck charm) and the shield which would protect the heart. They are spiritual armor in physical form, a psychic safety zone. They say: better to have false comfort than no comfort at all.

Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar lead by Khawaja Shams, VP of Engineering at Elemental Technologies, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:

Teela Crosthwaite Smith is a corporate lawyer and litigator. Her practice is dedicated to helping entrepreneurs build, grow, and protect their start-ups and small businesses. She provides a wide range of counseling and transactional services, including business formation, contract drafting and negotiation, funding and financing, and employment matters. Teela has also guided entrepreneurs, including venture funds, in restructuring their business ownership interests in mergers and acquisition matters.

Jessica Crannell-Menard has spent the last 4 years as Now CFO’s Northwest Business Development Manager in the Portland office. Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar led by Manjiri McCoy, Software Development Engineer at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:

At the March 9th Trail Blazers game, PDXWIT is partnering with Girls Inc. to sell raffle tickets for a 50/50 Raffle. Proceeds will go to Girls Inc.

Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. They equip girls aged 6-18 with the skills and confidence to access a bright and economically-independent future, through after school programs and experiences that help girls grow up to be healthy, educated, and independent.

Note, this is a volunteer event that requires 3-4 hours of standing, walking, and sales of raffle tickets to the general public. Talking points to assist with sales will be provided. Additionally, volunteers will be provided tickets to the Blazers game to watch the second half.

How does it work?

Here’s the scoop: The event starts with 15 minutes of networking. We will also encourage you to reconvene informally at the end. 3 projects will be selected for presentation.

Each project presenter has a total of 20 minutes for their project (10 minutes to present, 10 minutes for brainstorming challenge solutions and receiving feedback). Presentations will be timed.

Presenters have the option of a free one hour presentation coaching session with Tambre Leighn, a certified high performance coach who specializes in training experts in the medical, research, and technology sectors to present powerfully and with ease.

How do I apply to present?

News today is thick with stories of government agencies trying to find digital evidence of wrongdoing: interrogating mobile phones for evidence, tracing emails to find a stalker or looking at a killer’s search history to discover motives. Digital forensic analysis now plays a pivotal role in both corporate and legal investigations. However, few outside of the industry understand the intricacies involved in a forensic undertaking — the capabilities and limitations of the forensics investigative process, the role of the digital forensic investigator or the extent of the laws governing these actions.

In this session, Tiberius Hefflin, Founder of Go Boldly, will delve into the basics of digital forensics. Attendees will learn what digital forensics draws from forensic science, how the law informs what a forensic investigator is ethically able to do, the many uses of digital forensics, evidence collection methods, anti-forensics methods, what the incident response process should look like and how they can maintain crime scene integrity until investigators can carry out an assessment.

While the subject is dense and could certainly be expanded, this introduction is aimed at those new to digital forensics with the goal of providing a solid foundational understanding which can be built upon with self directed learning.

Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, a civil rights advocate, feminist and UCLA School of Law and Columbia Law professor specializing in race and gender issues, coined the term intersectionality to describe how people's various identities (racial, gender, class. etc.) intersect and overlap, creating a cumulative effect in the discrimination they receive.

At this year’s summer soiree, we dedicate our theme to looking at the future of tech through an intersectional lens. Otherwise, the technologies that are being developed today will not consider the needs of large swaths of our population and thus will not succeed. This night is dedicated to introducing you to leaders in the spaces of blockchain, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence to demonstrate the accessibility of these spaces to the people of our community. We also hope to carve a path forward, together, where we can push for the change that needs to happen in these industries. To support this discussion our conversation starter for the evening is “how can tech be more accessible to underrepresented communities?”

Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. In this seminar led by an engineering leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. Many people starting out in the software industry experience frustration when work conversations are riddled with acronyms or tech jargon they do not understand. They become overwhelmed by the enormous amount of information to learn and do not know where to start. To rectify that, we have a group of women speaking who can demystify some of the tools, jargon, and jobs around software:

Polina Vorozheykina, a software engineer at New Relic, will share her experience entering the industry into a far more senior team of 12 engineers. She will cover useful terminology to know, how to go about asking questions, and how to begin building broad software expertise.

Ashley Puls, a principal engineer and architect at New Relic, will cover some useful tools and terminology engineers encounter on a daily basis.

Elisa Binette, the senior manager of Site Reliability Engineering at New Relic, will demystify some of the roles and job titles used in the technology industry. What’s a full stack, front end, or backend engineer? What’s a DBA? What are the key differences between a senior, lead, or engineering manager?

Afterwards, beginning engineers should better understand common technology terms and the desired skills within each role. They should have a “lay of the land” and feel empowered to go out and learn.

Transitioning into the tech industry can be scary, intimidating and for some,insurmountable. Since those of us who have been around for a while may have forgotten the struggle, this month we are asking ourselves how we can make space for those who are new. Just 2 percent of VC dollars go to women, according to PitchBook, and the deal sizes are far smaller than what male counterparts receive. On the other side of the pitch table, women make up less than 10% of the partner roles at VC firms. In the world of VC, money means power. When women have power, they are more likely to invest in other women and their communities. How do we increase the number of female entrepreneurs and VCs so that the world of invention and innovation is not reserved for just one kind of leader?

Please join PDXWIT for an exclusive opportunity to hear from one of Silicon Valley's most respected leaders and VCs Heidi Roizen. Heidi has been a VC for nearly 20 years and today is a partner at DFJ. She also co-leads Stanford's Entrepreneurial Leaders Fellowship Program and advises a variety of companies including DMGT, Zoox, Planet, Memphis Meats and ShareThis. 2018 has been another big year for the PDXWIT and Women Who Code Portland communities, and we are thrilled to come together, for the FIFTH year, to celebrate the holidays and what we’ve accomplished. The theme of the event will be Transforming Technology: Culture and Community. In honor of our theme, PDXWIT and Women Who Code Portland will be recognizing individuals for their great work over the year transforming the technology industry.

PDXWIT will be honoring two individuals, Best Contributor and Best Speaker. If you or someone you know has been working hard to make PDXWIT a success or spoken at one of our events, please submit your nominations by November 20th. The Best Contributor award will be selected in advance by a panel, and finalists for the Best Speaker Award will perform runoff Lightning Talks at the Holiday Party. The winner will be selected by text-to-vote.

Women Who Code regularly celebrates their members' achievements with the #ApplaudHer hashtag. The #ApplaudHer hashtag highlights victories such as accepting a new position, receiving a promotion, speaking at a conference or meeting a personal goal. The concept is simple: Women Who Code believes that recognition can create change and that rewriting public perceptions can transform tech. During the Women + Tech Holiday Party, Women Who Code will be announcing the Technical Leadership and Rising Tech Star award winners, chosen from the submissions received. Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even harder to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar guided by an engineering leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:

• Morning preparation, attire, mindset

• Preparation for the non-technical parts

• How to study for the coding interview

• How to execute the coding test

The technical parts covered by this training are targeted towards Software Development (SDE) roles, but Software Management (SDM) and Technical Program Manager (TPM) candidates may also find it beneficial. This is primarily a training event, note that recruiting managers and recruiters may not be present. If you wish to attend a recruiting/networking event, please keep an eye on future events.

Purpose:

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
